Chiropody and Foot care

Chiropodist in Mississauga

A chiropodist, also known as a foot and ankle physician, is a medical professional experienced in providing treatment of disorders of the lower extremity, foot, and ankle. Podiatry is the new name given to chiropody; however, both podiatrist and chiropodist are considered as foot doctors in many countries across the world. There is no difference between their qualification or experience.

What Does a Chiropodist Do?

Chiropodists are trained to treat abnormal conditions of the lower limbs and feet. A chiropodist can give you advice on what type of footwear to put on and how to look after your feet. They also treat infections, provide pain relief, correct and prevent foot deformities, and keep people mobile and active.

They can also treat day-to-day foot and ankle problems, including:

  • Corns and calluses
  • Toenail problems, such as ingrown toenails, thickened toenails, and fungal nail infections
  • Verrucas
  • Smelly feet
  • Heel pain
  • Aching feet
  • Athlete's foot
  • Flat feet
  • Bunions
  • Foot Blisters
  • Sports injuries
  • Dry and cracked heels
  • Gout

How Can a Chiropodist Help?

You may want to consult a chiropodist for evaluation and treatment if you have thickened or discolored toenails, painful feet, growths such as verrucas and warts, peeling or scaling on the soles, cracks or cuts in the skin, or any other foot-related problem.

Chiropodists can also provide orthotics, which are custom-made paddings, insoles, and arch supports to relieve heel or arch pain. The orthotic is put into your shoe to make them more comfortable, realign your foot, and take the pressure off sensitive areas of your foot.

Even if your feet, ankles and lower extremities are generally in good condition, you should consider having at least a single session of podiatry every year. For instance, you may want to have your toenails clipped or any hard skin on your feet removed.

Chiropodists can also help with complex foot problems, including diagnosing, treating and preventing injuries related to physical activities and sports.
